Iceland

Iceland 22.07. - 25.07.08

Availability - Now fully booked for 2008

Whenever you introduce yourself to an Icelandic person, you are automatically asked whose son or daughter you are. Family is important for Icelanders – for generations now, the descendants of the Vikings have offered a different kind of hospitality than their rather rough reputation might lead one to expect. That may be down to the fact that you can always make out your next guests from afar on this sparsely populated, almost treeless island. They're never a real surprise, so there's always time to prepare a freshly brewed cup of coffee to welcome them. Icelanders can also be sure that their guests will always come back again to explore their unique, almost surreal island.

And when the Touareg drives through the mist of spectacular waterfalls and follows a meandering river with the spray pearling off its body, in search of a good place to cross, even the Icelanders – themselves exposed to breathtaking scenery all day long – will stop and stare. Speed with pure power is an unusual combination here in this wondrous wilderness.

Icelanders have their globetrotting ancestors to thank for their love of conquering large distances. And when you think that even Icelandic horses with their famous "tölt" aren't exactly slow, it's clear that the Touareg must have more than a few drops of Icelandic blood coursing through its veins.

Day 1.

You will fly from Germany to Reykjavik in the morning or, if you prefer to make your own travel arrangements, we will meet you at the airport in Keflavik. With an outdoor temperature of 10°C, it's chilly or icy cold here even in summer: Iceland is a land of emotions – the perceived temperature determines how cold it really is. But you can create your own microclimate in the Touaregs provided, making the two-hour scenic drive to the hotel near Hvolsvöllur on the banks of the Ranga a perfect introduction to Iceland. A welcome dinner will be served at the hotel.

Day 2.

The sumptuous breakfast buffet goes to show that Icelanders don't like to leave the house on an empty stomach. After an interesting and entertaining talk about off-road driving, you will set off in your Touareg for the mountains around the Myrdals glacier. In a unique landscape shaped by volcanoes and powerful rivers of ice, the off-road experts will show you the best way to tackle difficult tracks and cross rivers. You will have the once-in-a-lifetime chance to go for a soothing dip in the geothermal water of the hot springs of Landmannalaugar. A generous packed lunch will keep you going throughout the day. The route back to the hotel takes you over little-used tracks which will pose an interesting challenge or two. Traditional Icelandic dishes back at the hotel are the perfect end to the day.

Day 3.

You will check out of the hotel after breakfast. Your off-road skills will be put to the test on very difficult tracks. But it's well worth it: if the weather is good, you will eat lunch with a glorious panoramic view of the Kerlingar Mountains. With a view of the mighty Langjökull glacier, you will reach the Kjölur track and follow it southwards on the way to Gullfoss. The geyser, bubbling springs and a geothermal area are further breathtaking natural spectacles along this route. If you haven't found yourself going hot and cold yet, bear in mind that the landscape here has been doing that for millions of years. The road to Reykjavik is good and will take you to a hotel in the city centre, where you will be treated to specialities from the polar region after this eventful off-road adventure.

Day 4.

After breakfast, it'll be time to say goodbye to Iceland and the Touareg. You will fly back to Germany and one thing is for sure: you will take with you a desire to come back to the cold one day.
